Polyester powder coating

Overview

Polyester Powder Coating is one of the most common types of powder coatings and one of KGE Group’s main coating products. Widely used in metal applications, particularly for building exteriors, it combines excellent surface appearance with reliable durability, adhesion, and corrosion resistance. With continuous formulation upgrades, KGE Polyester Powder Coating can reliably achieve 5–8 years of weather resistance, while offering a broad range of colors and finishes to meet both functional and aesthetic requirements.

With an annual production capacity of up to 50 million tons, KGE Polyester Powder Coating has been widely used in various large-scale building projects across China. Supported by 10+ production bases and 30 regional service centers, KGE maintains a robust supply chain to ensure stable and on-time delivery. This production and service network enables us to efficiently meet the requirements of large-volume orders and urgent project schedules.

Ordinary polyester powder coatings are made of outdoor polyester resin plus TGIC, which can meet the general requirements of outdoor products and comply with  AAMA2603/ QualicoatClass I standard, with a weathering  period of 5-8 years.

Introduction

Polyester Powder Coating is a thermosetting powder coating based on acid-functional polyester resins, widely used for decorative and protective applications on metal surfaces. Depending on the application, the coating can be crosslinked with different hardeners, such as TGIC (Triglycidyl Isocyanurate), HAA (Hydroxyalkylamide), or glycidyl ester, providing different performance characteristics for interior and exterior applications.

Polyester powder coatings offer excellent resistance to UV radiation and weathering, making them particularly suitable for exterior applications. They also provide good surface appearance and can be formulated in a wide range of colors, gloss levels, and surface textures, combining functional protection with aesthetic requirements.

Features

Weather Resistance

Designed for outdoor exposure, polyester powder coatings can provide good resistance to UV radiation and weathering.

Durable Protection

The cured coating forms a durable protective film with good resistance to mechanical damage and environmental exposure.

Corrosion Resistance

Polyester powder coatings can provide corrosion protection for metal substrates when combined with appropriate surface preparation and pretreatment.

Color & Finish Versatility

Available formulations can offer a broad range of colors, gloss levels, and surface textures to meet different decorative requirements.

Decorative & Functional

Polyester powder coatings are used for both decorative and functional applications, combining surface aesthetics with protective performance.

Key Application

Superdurable polyester powder coatings provide 2–3 times higher UV resistance than standard polyester powder coatings, making them particularly suitable for demanding exterior applications where long-term weatherability and color retention are required.

They combine strong mechanical and chemical resistance with superior resistance to yellowing compared with epoxy and hybrid systems. These properties make them especially suitable for:

  • Architectural aluminum extrusions
  • Agricultural machinery
  • Automotive parts

Polyester powder coatings can be cured at temperatures ranging from 160°C to 240°C, depending on the formulation and application requirements.

Beyond exterior applications, polyester powder coatings can also be used for interior applications exposed to high temperatures, such as ovens and electric heaters, where their thermal stability provides reliable coating performance.

Q&A

Polyester powder coating is widely used for architectural aluminum profiles, curtain walls, fences, outdoor furniture, and metal structures due to its excellent weather resistance, UV stability, and vibrant finish.

Typically, polyester powder coatings last 10–15 years in standard outdoor conditions. With high-quality formulations and proper surface preparation, durability can exceed 20 years.

Polyester powder coatings offer superior UV and weather resistance, making them ideal for outdoor use, while epoxy coatings are best for indoor applications due to their excellent chemical resistance but poor UV stability.

Yes. Polyester powder coating is especially suitable for aluminum surfaces, commonly used in window frames, facades, and aluminum panels. It provides a smooth, corrosion-resistant finish with excellent adhesion.

The selection should consider the intended environment, indoor or outdoor exposure, required weatherability, substrate, desired appearance, curing conditions, and performance requirements. For outdoor applications, the appropriate polyester grade and curing system should be selected according to the expected exposure conditions.
